Lime

Adding lime to clay soil will unlock the nutrients in the soil.

Lime will make clay soil friable and crumbly. It will be less likely to retain water and therefore drier.

This will allow it to be cultivated earlier in the spring.

Lime also helps to make inert plant foods usable.

People used to apply large quantities of lime over long intervals, but it is more effective to apply smaller quantities at more frequent intervals.
