Horseradish

If you grow horseradishes in your garden, a delicious condiment that is also known for its medicinal properties will be readily available to you.

The root of the horseradish can improve the taste of sandwiches, salads and other meals.

In addition, horseradish root contains a natural antibiotic and can be used to cure throat infections and urinary tract infections. It also helps relieve headaches and sinus congestion. Horseradish root is believed to improve liver function and to help control diabetes.

HorseradishYou should grow horseradishes from the roots of old horseradish plants.

Grow horseradishes in moist, rich soil.

Place crowns with 2 or 3 inches of root attached at the bottoms of trenches that are 2 feet apart and 15 to 18 inches deep.

The pieces of horseradish should be placed 12 inches apart.

Instead of digging trenches, you can also dig deep holes, stick the pieces of horseradish into the holes and fill the holes with good soil.

Plant horseradish early in the spring. If the soil is good, you may be able to use some of the horseradish roots the next fall, but it is usually best to leave them for another year.

When you take up the roots, make sure to clear the whole bed. Do not leave any roots growing in the soil.
